According to Ayurvedic texts, a person is healthy as long as their Agni (digestive or metabolic fire) is functioning optimally. When Agni is impaired, food remains undigested, leading to fermentation and the creation of Ama (toxins), which block bodily channels.
The Four States of Agni
1. **Sama Agni (Balanced Fire):** Perfect digestion, zero bloating, clear elimination, and strong physical energy. This state supports a clear mind and glowing skin.
2. **Vishama Agni (Irregular Fire):** Typically associated with Vata. Digestion varies daily, causing gas, constipation, variable appetite, and physical instability.
3. **Tikshna Agni (Sharp/Intense Fire):** Associated with Pitta. Digestion is too fast, causing hyperacidity, burning sensations, loose stool, and excessive hunger.
4. **Manda Agni (Slow Fire):** Associated with Kapha. Digestion is weak, causing heaviness, lethargy, slow metabolism, weight gain, and clear white tongue coating.
The 13 Types of Agni
Ayurveda identifies 13 distinct types of Agni in the human body. The primary one is Jatharagni (the main digestive fire in the stomach). Below that are the five Bhutagnis (which metabolize the elemental components of food) and seven Dhatvagnis (which govern metabolic processes within the seven bodily tissues). Keeping Jatharagni strong is the key to ensuring all other Agnis function correctly.
