Ama: The Root Cause of Disease in Ayurveda

By Dr. Latha RadhakrishnanPublished on June 01, 2026

In Ayurvedic pathology, the primary root of all disease (besides Dosha imbalance) is Ama. Ama is the toxic, sticky byproduct of poor digestion (Manda Agni) that accumulates in the gastrointestinal tract and enters the deep tissues.

Symptoms of Accumulated Ama Common indicators of Ama in the body include a thick coating on the tongue, bad breath, chronic fatigue, heavy limbs, brain fog, digestive issues, and joint pain that worsens in damp weather. Recognizing these signs early allows you to intervene before toxins settle in weaker tissues.

The Stages of Disease (Shat Kriya Kala) Ayurveda describes six stages of disease progression, starting with accumulation (Sanchaya) and aggravation (Prakopa) of Doshas, followed by the overflow (Prasara) and localization (Sthana Samsraya) of Ama and Doshas. By the time a disease manifests (Vyakti), it has progressed through these subtle stages. Understanding this path helps physicians treat disease at its root before it becomes chronic.

Eliminating Ama Ama can be eliminated through fasting (Langhana), drinking warm water with ginger, consuming light, spiced mung-bean soup, and undergoing clinical Panchakarma treatments. Avoiding cold food, dairy, and heavy meals during cleansing is essential to allow the digestive fire to burn off the toxins.
