Triphala: The Universal Ayurvedic Panacea

By Dr. Latha RadhakrishnanPublished on June 15, 2026

Triphala, translating to 'three fruits', is the most popular formula in Ayurvedic pharmacopeia. Combining Amalaki, Bibhitaki, and Haritaki, it acts as a mild laxative, liver stimulant, and powerful systemic antioxidant, balancing all three Doshas.

The Three Fruits of Triphala 1. **Amalaki (Indian Gooseberry):** Rich in Vitamin C, cooling in nature, balances Pitta, and supports immune health and tissue regeneration. 2. **Bibhitaki:** Warming in nature, balances Kapha, and clears excess mucus, respiratory congestion, and accumulated fat. 3. **Haritaki:** Warm, balances all three Doshas (especially Vata), and gently cleanses the colon, promoting healthy absorption.

How to Use Triphala Typically taken as a powder (churna) mixed with warm water at night, Triphala supports daily bowel movements, cleanses the gut, and strengthens eye health. It can also be prepared as Triphala Ghritha (ghee) for deeper tissue nourishment, or used as a decoction (Kwath) to rinse wounds and treat skin irritations. Unlike chemical laxatives, Triphala is non-habit forming and acts as a colon tonic.
